Emergency plumbing in the Hamptons: burst and frozen pipes, no water, and what the night call costs

A burst or frozen pipe costs $200–3,000 to repair, about $500 typically, with labor nearly 80% of the bill; with labor, pipe runs $150–250 a linear foot, a main line $150–2,000 and a sewer line $1,300–4,700. The emergency adds $100–300 for the call-out, $50–300 in travel, about $100 flat to thaw a line, and after-hours rates of time-and-a-half to triple; an ordinary service call is $100–250. Water damage is the larger bill: $1,000–4,000 to remediate, drywall $250–750. One insured home in sixty files a water-damage or freezing claim each year.

The first ten minutes
Find the main shut-off before you need it: usually where the water line enters the house, at the meter on Suffolk County Water Authority mains or at the pressure tank on a well. Close it. Then take the water heater off — its breaker if electric, its gas valve if not — because a tank that keeps heating with no supply is the second emergency. Open a low faucet to drain the lines. Then call, and call a plumber who answers at night; the Hamptons companies that run 24-hour lines say so on their sites, and the ones that do not, do not.

No Long Island plumber publishes a rate: the three Hamptons companies we checked all say call for a quote, and one was running a $0 diagnostic-fee promotion for late August through mid-September 2026. National figures are one cost guide’s 2026 ranges, printed as ranges.
Why it happens here
The house is empty. About 60% of the Town of East Hampton’s housing and half of Southampton Town’s is seasonal or vacant, and a frozen pipe in an empty house runs until someone notices the water bill or the ceiling. The insurance industry’s rule for an unoccupied house is heat at 55°F or the system drained, and a 2024 New York court case turned on exactly that thermostat; low utility bills have been used as evidence the heat was off. The power goes out: Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020 took out about 645,000 Long Island customers for up to eight days, and a boiler, a circulator and a well pump all stop with it, which in February is a freeze. The winter design temperature at Islip is 15.7°F and at Westhampton 11.9°F, the numbers a heating system is sized to; a pipe in an uninsulated crawl space sees worse.
The claim
The Insurance Information Institute puts water damage and freezing at about one insured home in sixty per year, the second most common homeowners claim after wind and hail; winter storms caused nearly $6 billion in insured losses in 2022. A smart shutoff that closes the main when it senses a leak or a freeze costs $579.99 for the one we could price; a Wi-Fi freeze alarm from about $25. We could not find an insurer that publishes a discount for either, so we do not claim one.
